What is eSIM?
eSIM (Embedded SIM) = a digital SIM built into your phone.
You use it by receiving a carrier profile via QR code or app—no physical USIM card.
- Install: Scan QR or download profile from provider app (usually Wi‑Fi required)
- Activate: Use “at install” or “when connected locally” depending on plan
- Form: No card, so less worry about loss or damage
Pros
- Travel: Install before departure, use data as soon as you arrive
- Often cheaper than roaming
- Keep home number (USIM) and use data on eSIM only (dual SIM)
- Easy to switch countries and plans without swapping cards
Cons / Precautions
- eSIM-compatible device required (e.g. iPhone XS+, Galaxy S20+)
- Many plans cannot be reinstalled after deletion → check before deleting
- Turn off data roaming on home USIM to avoid high roaming charges
Travel flow
- Purchase → Choose country and data on eSIMoa (or similar), pay
- Receive QR/code → Delivered by email or app
- Install → Add eSIM profile to phone on Wi‑Fi before departure
- Activate → Use data after arrival (or immediately, depending on plan)
- Data line → In Settings, set “Cellular data” to eSIM
