eSIM compatible devices

TL;DR (quick check)

  • If EID is shown, the device likely supports eSIM.
  • Even with eSIM support, carrier lock can block overseas eSIMs.
  • iPhone: Apple support docs; Galaxy: Samsung service docs—most accurate.

1) Check eSIM support (EID)

iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to General > About.
  3. Scroll and find EID.
  4. If EID is shown, eSIM is supported.

Android

Menu names vary by manufacturer/model; usually:

  • Settings > Phone info (or Device info) > Status / SIM status
  • Settings > Connections > SIM manager — if Add eSIM appears, likely supported.

Quickest: In Phone app, dial *#06# and see if EID is shown.

2) When eSIM “supported” still fails

Carrier lock

If the phone is locked to a carrier, overseas eSIM may get no signal or the add-eSIM menu may be restricted.

Region / model

  • Mainland China models may have different eSIM policy (check Apple/Samsung).
  • Some regions have eSIM-only iPhone (no physical SIM slot).

MDM (work/school)

Company/school-managed devices may have eSIM disabled by policy.

3) iPhone support (quick)

  • iPhone XS / XS Max / XR and later support eSIM.
  • Some models (e.g. iPhone 14 US) are eSIM-only.
  • Apple documents device/region/carrier differences.

4) Galaxy (Samsung) — summary

Samsung: to use eSIM on Galaxy you must:

  • Activate an eSIM plan with carrier/provider first, and
  • With the device on mobile network or Wi‑Fi, download the profile via Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM.

Deleting eSIM in device settings does not cancel the plan; cancel/suspend must be done with carrier/provider.

5) Check carrier lock

eSIM use generally requires carrier unlock.

  1. Insert another carrier’s SIM and check if calls/data work.
  2. If not, the device may be locked; ask your carrier about unlock.
