Grab is the absolute basic in Vietnam too, running in every major city nationwide — Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Phu Quoc, and more. Unlike local Vietnamese taxis, the fare is fixed before you ride, so there's no haggling or overcharging to worry about.

GrabBike: motorbike taxi. In Vietnam's narrow alleys and heavy traffic, a motorbike is far faster than a car — ideal for Hanoi's Old Quarter or the alleys of Ho Chi Minh City's District 1.
GrabCar: standard car taxi. Better value if you have a lot of luggage or two or more people traveling together.
GrabFood: food delivery in major cities across Vietnam, most active in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Payment: register an overseas Visa/Mastercard card for instant use — cash is also accepted.
Tip 1: in Vietnam, GrabBike runs 2–3 times cheaper than GrabCar. If you're traveling alone or without much luggage, GrabBike is well worth using.
Tip 2: around Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi or Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City, you'll often need to set your Grab pickup point at the entrance of an alley.
Caution: if you're not used to Vietnam's motorbike culture, wear your helmet securely on a GrabBike and hold the handle or the driver's waist.

inDrive

A fare-negotiation ride-hailing app that also operates in Vietnam and is often cheaper than Grab — worth comparing for longer rides, like airport-to-city trips.

Fare negotiation: enter your destination and propose your own price; a driver accepts and you're on your way.
Cash payment: cash is the default in most cases.
Coverage: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang
Tip: the roughly 35km ride from Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport into the city (Hoan Kiem) runs about 350,000–400,000 VND on Grab — offering 280,000–320,000 VND on inDrive is sometimes accepted.

Google Maps

Covers transit information for major cities including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang. Hanoi's urban rail (metro) and Ho Chi Minh City's metro lines have been added, along with some bus routes.

Offline maps are essential: Hanoi's Old Quarter has a maze of alleys with irregular building numbers, which makes offline maps especially useful.
Vietnamese addressing: on some streets the same house number appears more than once, or an alley has its own separate numbering, so a Google Maps address isn't always accurate. Always confirm by phone.
Tip 1: save pho restaurants, coffee shops, and other local spots to a Google Maps list ahead of time — saved pins stay visible offline.
Tip 2: search "Vietnamese coffee near me" to discover cafés locals actually go to — shops famous for egg coffee (cà phê trứng) show up on Maps too.
Tip 3: the Da Nang–Hoi An route (about 30km) runs roughly 200,000 VND on Grab. Checking the distance on Google Maps beforehand helps you negotiate a fair fare.

3. Translation

Vietnamese is a complex language with six tones. It uses the Latin alphabet, but with distinctive tone marks attached. Lean on camera translation.

Camera translation: translate menus, signs, and notices in real time — it even recognizes the tone marks in Vietnamese dish names.
Offline pack: download the Vietnamese offline pack (about 40MB) in advance.
Mind the tones: because tone completely changes meaning in Vietnamese, don't over-trust voice translation — showing translated text is the safer option.
Tip: at Vietnamese markets (Vincom Market, Ben Thanh, and others) translating a price tag with the camera helps you quickly parse the numbers and units.

Translation quality is generally natural for this language pair. Useful when translating a written inquiry into Vietnamese for a hotel or restaurant.

Voice translation: speak in your language and hear it in Vietnamese — handy when asking locals for directions.
Phrasebook: save frequently used Vietnamese phrases (haggling, ordering food, and so on) so they're always at hand.
Tip: Vietnam has plenty of Korean restaurants and Korean travelers, so some local guides and shop staff know a bit of Korean too — worth keeping in mind if that's your native language.

The Vietnamese dong (VND) uses very large numbers (roughly 18,000–20,000 VND to the US dollar). Miscalculations happen often until you get used to the scale. A Wise card lets you pay without losing money on the exchange rate.

Live exchange rate: pay at a rate far better than what your bank offers.
ATM fees: two free overseas ATM withdrawals a month (within limits).
Tip: if a card terminal in Vietnam prompts for DCC (dynamic currency conversion), always choose to pay in local currency (VND). Choosing "pay in your home currency" adds a 3–5% fee.

Revolut

A travel-friendly debit card app similar to Wise. Use it wherever cards are accepted in Vietnam — high-end hotels, large shopping malls, and some restaurants.

Instant notifications: get an app notification the moment you pay, so you can track your spending — and lock the card instantly if it's lost or stolen.
Tip: cash (VND) is still used heavily in Vietnam. Make sure you have some on hand, changed at an airport bank counter or a street exchange shop.

Tip: morning pho (phở) often sells out of ingredients by around 10 AM. If you're ordering delivery to your accommodation, order early — around 7–8 AM.
