A ride-hailing app used across Southeast Asia, and the very first app you should install for a Thailand trip. Founded in Malaysia in 2012, Grab now operates in eight Southeast Asian countries, and in Thailand it covers major tourist areas including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket, and Koh Samui.

Why it's essential: regular Thai taxis frequently skip the meter or overcharge tourists. Grab fixes the fare before you get in, so there's no haggling and you travel safely.
GrabCar: standard car taxi, good for airport, hotel, and mall trips.
GrabBike: motorbike taxi, the fastest way to cut through Bangkok traffic. A helmet is required for safety.
GrabFood: food delivery in the same app — thousands of restaurants deliver across Bangkok's main districts.
GrabMart: instant delivery from convenience stores and supermarkets, handy for water, drinks, and everyday items.
Payment: both card (overseas Visa/Mastercard) and cash are accepted.
Tip: taking Grab from Suvarnabhumi Airport into the city is typically 30–40% cheaper than a regular taxi. Head to the designated Grab pickup zone (near the 3rd-floor counters) — just follow the signage.
Caution: during Bangkok's peak periods (year-end, Songkran) surge pricing can push fares to 2–3 times the normal rate.

inDrive

A global ride-hailing app that started in Russia, and often cheaper than Grab. Its defining feature is a system where you negotiate the fare directly.

How fare negotiation works: enter your destination, propose your own price, and a nearby driver accepts if they're willing to take that fare. Bidding too low may mean a long wait or no driver at all.
Coverage: major Thai cities including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, and Hua Hin
Payment: cash by default, with card support in some areas
Tip: compare inDrive against Grab during Grab's surge-pricing hours to cut costs.
Caution: because you set the price yourself, first-time users may not know a fair rate. Check the distance on Google Maps and offer around 90% of Grab's quoted fare — that usually gets accepted.

Google Maps

Covers maps and transit for most of Thailand. Bangkok's BTS Skytrain, MRT (subway), and Airport Rail Link routes are all accurately mapped.

Offline maps: download Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, and any other area you'll visit while on Wi-Fi before you go — each region is roughly 100–300MB.
BTS/MRT route search: get the best route and travel time between any two stations, including accurate transfer details.
Tip 1: when calling a Grab, search your destination on Google Maps first and copy the address for more accurate input.
Tip 2: Thai restaurants get plenty of Google Maps reviews. Search "restaurants near me" and pick based on photos and reviews.
Tip 3: offline maps are especially handy in the maze-like lanes around Chiang Mai's Old City, Pattaya's Walking Street, and Bangkok's Wat Pho area.

3. Translation

Thai uses its own unique script, which even most English speakers can't read. Lean on camera translation. Thai has no spaces between words and complex vowel/consonant marking, which makes it a genuinely hard language for machine translation — but Google Translate's Thai recognition keeps steadily improving.

Camera translation: translate restaurant menus, pharmacy products, and road signs in real time — especially useful when prices are written in Thai numerals.
Offline pack: download the Thai offline pack (about 45MB) in advance for basic translation without data.
Voice translation: speak in your language and hear it spoken back in Thai — just hand your phone to a driver or vendor.
Tip: pointing the camera at a Thai massage price list or spa menu instantly shows you what's on offer and how much it costs.
Basic greeting: "Sawadee krap" (สวัสดีครับ, said by men) / "Sawadee ka" (สวัสดีค่ะ, said by women) — hello. Locals genuinely appreciate hearing this.

Built by Naver. Switching between Papago and Google Translate lets you pick whichever produces the more natural phrasing for your language pair with Thai.

Photo translation: camera-based translation, just like Google Translate.
Conversation mode: real-time two-way voice interpretation — useful when booking a massage or haggling while shopping.
Tip: messages you send to a hotel or accommodation often come out more polite when translated through Papago than Google Translate.

4. Payments & currency exchange

Wise

A fintech app that minimizes the exchange-rate loss on overseas card payments. Getting a Wise card is a smart way to avoid the dynamic currency conversion (DCC) trap when paying by card in Thailand.

Live exchange rate: convert and pay at close to the real mid-market rate, far better than typical bank rates.
Wise debit card: two free overseas ATM withdrawals per month after the card is issued (subject to limits).
Multi-currency account: convert to Thai baht in the app first and pay from that balance to avoid a second round of conversion loss.
Tip: always choose "local currency (THB)" at Thai ATMs. Choosing to be charged in your home currency adds a 3–5% DCC fee.
Caution: opening a Wise account requires identity verification — set it up before you leave.

Revolut

Exchange rates: the free Standard plan converts at the mid-market rate on weekdays; a 0.5–1% markup applies on weekends.
Virtual cards: generate a single-use virtual card number for online shopping to add a layer of security.
Tip: paying with a Revolut card at Bangkok malls like CentralWorld or EmQuartier avoids conversion loss entirely.

⚠️ Watch out: Thai ATMs charge a withdrawal fee of 180–220 baht. Where possible, exchanging cash at a currency exchange counter (Super Rich Thailand, SuperRich 1965, and similar) usually works out better than an ATM.

Secret Deals: exclusive discounted rates visible once you're signed in.
Tip: resorts in Koh Samui, Krabi, and Koh Phi Phi are often noticeably cheaper when compared on Agoda.

Thailand has a distinct wet season (May–October) and dry season (November–April). Check the hourly forecast to avoid getting caught in a squall (a short but intense downpour). In Bangkok's wet season especially, sudden heavy rain between 2 and 5 PM can flood the streets.

Hourly precipitation forecast: know ahead of time when squalls are likely and schedule indoor activities (malls, museums) for those hours.
Storm tracking: a storm approaching the Gulf of Thailand can make travel between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan impossible — check the weather regularly if you're island-hopping in summer.
