Overview of Cambodia travel

Cambodia is a Southeast Asian country famous for Angkor Wat, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Siem Reap (the gateway city to Angkor Wat), Phnom Penh (the capital), and Sihanoukville (a beach town) are the main destinations. Both the Cambodian riel (KHR) and US dollar (USD) circulate together, with USD serving as the de facto primary payment currency.

1. Taxi & transport

Grab

📱 Download: App Store | Google Play

Grab operates in Cambodia (Siem Reap and Phnom Penh) too. Essential for avoiding overcharging on regular taxis and tuk-tuks. Overcharging foreign tourists is common in Cambodia, so you should lean heavily on app-based transport.

  • GrabCar: standard car taxi. The safest, most transparent option for getting from the airport into the city.
  • GrabTukTuk: request a tuk-tuk. You can call Cambodia's iconic tuk-tuk through the app, with the fare confirmed in advance.
  • GrabFood: available for food delivery in major areas of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
  • Payment: accepts international credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) or cash (USD)
  • Tip 1: taking GrabCar from Siem Reap Airport into town is cheaper than the regular taxis waiting outside. There will be plenty of touts at the airport — ignore them and use the Grab app instead.
  • Tip 2: if Grab matching is slow in Phnom Penh, try PassApp as an alternative.
  • Tip 3: the most common way to do a day tour of Angkor Wat is renting a tuk-tuk for the full day. Renting directly through your hotel or guesthouse can sometimes be cheaper than GrabTukTuk.

PassApp

📱 Download: App Store | Google Play

A local Cambodian taxi/tuk-tuk app. A local ride-hailing service founded in Cambodia in 2016. Sometimes cheaper than Grab, and especially widely used in Siem Reap.

  • Tuk-tuk specialist: strong at booking Cambodia's traditional tuk-tuk (motorbike-towed rickshaw). Full-day rentals for Angkor Wat tours can also be booked through PassApp.
  • Local driver network: with many local drivers on the platform, matching can sometimes be faster.
  • Payment: accepts cash (USD/KHR) or card
  • Tip: booking a PassApp tuk-tuk for an Angkor Wat sunrise/sunset tour lets you comfortably visit multiple temple sites. A full day with a driver costs roughly $12–20.
  • Tip: a PassApp tuk-tuk from Siem Reap to the Angkor Wat ticket office (Angkor Enterprise) costs roughly $3–5.

2. Maps & navigation

Google Maps

📱 Download: App Store | Google Play

Maps and offline saving for Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Coverage inside the Angkor temple complex is limited, so it's a good idea to pair it with a guidebook or guide.

  • Offline saving essential: save Siem Reap and Phnom Penh offline in advance (about 40–80MB each). Internet can be unreliable in parts of Cambodia.
  • Angkor Wat area: Google Maps shows the location of the major temples (Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm, and more) within the complex. But guidance for routes inside the temples themselves is limited.
  • Finding dining: restaurants around Siem Reap's Pub Street have active Google Maps reviews.
  • Tip 1: the most efficient order is Angkor Wat (the main temple) → Ta Prohm (the "Tomb Raider" filming location) → Angkor Thom (Bayon Temple). Check the route in advance with Google Maps.
  • Tip 2: Phnom Penh's Royal Palace, Tuol Sleng Museum, and the Killing Fields all have accurate locations on Google Maps.
  • Note: outlying Siem Reap temple sites (Banteay Srei, Ta Nei, and more) may have limited map detail. A guide is recommended.

3. Translation

Google Translate

📱 Download: App Store | Google Play

Khmer uses a distinctive round script that's very hard to read. Lean heavily on camera translation.

  • Khmer offline pack: download it in advance for basic translation without a data connection.
  • Camera translation: translates market signs, local restaurant menus, and road signs in real time. Khmer script recognition isn't perfect, but it's a useful reference.
  • English usually works: English is widely understood near tourist areas in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh — prioritize English communication over Khmer translation.
  • Basic phrases: "អរគុណ (akun)" — thank you, "ប៉ុន្មាន (ponman)" — how much?
  • Tip: with so many Korean travelers visiting Cambodia, some locals in tourist areas know basic Korean.

Papago (Naver)

📱 Download: App Store | Google Play

For Korean↔English/Khmer translation. In Cambodia, you'll mostly use it for Korean↔English rather than Khmer.

  • Conversation mode: speak in Korean, hear English output. Useful when talking with local guides or hotel staff.
  • Tip: translate a food allergy note into English with Papago and show it to restaurant staff in Cambodia.

4. Payments & currency exchange

Wise

📱 Download: App Store | Google Play

USD is Cambodia's main currency in practice. A Wise card lets you pay in USD or KHR without exchange rate losses.

  • USD usage: USD is the default currency in Cambodia. Change under $1 is often given back in KHR (riel).
  • ATM withdrawals: withdraw USD from ATMs in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh — a Wise card minimizes fees.
  • Tip: carry plenty of $1 and $5 bills instead of large bills ($50, $100). Small shops and tuk-tuks often can't make change for large bills.
  • Note: some places refuse torn or worn USD bills. Bring mostly newer bills.

Revolut

📱 Download: App Store | Google Play

A travel-focused card similar to Wise. Pay at a favorable exchange rate at Cambodia's card-friendly upscale restaurants and malls.

  • Instant lock: lock the card instantly in the app if lost. Useful for staying safe in areas of Cambodia with pickpocket risk, like night markets or crowded spots.

5. Accommodation booking

Agoda

📱 Download: App Store | Google Play

Book hotels and guesthouses in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Siem Reap sees many Angkor Wat visitors, so accommodations span a wide range of price points.

  • Siem Reap location: staying near Pub Street gives easy access to restaurants, bars, and the night market.
  • Angkor Wat accessibility: it's about a 15–20 minute tuk-tuk ride to the Angkor Wat entrance. Grab/PassApp convenience matters more than your exact accommodation location.
  • Tip: Siem Reap accommodation prices rise during peak season (November–March). They can more than double around Christmas and New Year, so book early.

Booking.com

📱 Download: App Store | Google Play

Along with Agoda, essential for comparing accommodation in Cambodia. Business hotels in Phnom Penh or beach resorts in Sihanoukville are sometimes cheaper on Booking.com.

6. Dining & activity bookings

Klook

📱 Download: App Store | Google Play

Book tours, activities, and admission tickets for Cambodia. Great things to book on Klook in Cambodia:

  • Angkor Wat admission: the official Angkor Enterprise ticket. 1-day pass ($37), 3-day pass ($62), 7-day pass ($72). Buying ahead on Klook avoids the on-site purchase queue.
  • Angkor Wat sunrise tour: a sunrise-viewing tour departing at 4am. A guide included, taking you to the best viewpoints.
  • Tonlé Sap Lake tour: experience floating villages and fishing communities. Observe traditional Khmer ways of life.
  • Siem Reap cooking class: learn to cook traditional Cambodian dishes. Includes a local market tour.
  • Angkor balloon ride: view Angkor Wat's panorama from a helium balloon. A sunset ride is recommended.
  • Phnom Penh Killing Fields & Tuol Sleng Museum guided tour: an essential tour for understanding Cambodia's history
  • Tip: buying an Angkor Wat ticket after 5pm sometimes lets you start using it from the next day's sunrise. Check the rules on Klook in advance.

7. Food delivery

foodpanda

📱 Download: App Store | Google Play

Food delivery in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Options range from local Cambodian food (amok, bai sach chrouk, lort, and kroeung dishes) to Western food.

  • Phnom Penh: broad delivery coverage with many restaurants available.
  • Siem Reap: delivery is available around Pub Street and the night market area.
  • Tip: order amok (a coconut curry steamed dish), a Khmer classic, for delivery to your accommodation — one of the best local dishes you can try.

8. Weather

AccuWeather

📱 Download: App Store | Google Play

Cambodia has a distinct rainy season (May–October) and dry season (November–April). The ideal time to visit Angkor Wat is during the dry season, November–March.

  • Rainy season note: expect a short downpour once or twice a day during the rainy season. Bring a raincoat or a foldable umbrella.
  • Dry season heat: temperatures can climb above 40°C toward the end of the dry season (March–April). Staying well hydrated is essential when exploring the Angkor Wat ruins.
  • Tip: the best time to explore Angkor Wat is 7–10am (cooler) or after 4pm (sunset light). Midday (12–3pm) brings very strong, hot sun.

Why an eSIM matters for a Cambodia trip

You'll need data for Grab, PassApp, Google Maps, and checking your Klook tickets. Even inside the Angkor Wat complex, you'll need Google Maps to find your way to the next temple. A local SIM is available for purchase at Siem Reap Airport, but installing an eSIM beforehand lets you use data the moment you land.
