1. Taxi & Transport

Southeast Asia's largest ride-hailing platform, Grab, operates in Yangon. Some services scaled back after the 2021 coup, but GrabCar and GrabBike are still available in the city. Regular metered taxis require haggling and carry a risk of overcharging, but Grab's fare is fixed before you go, so you can ride worry-free. A GrabCar from Yangon International Airport (Mingaladon Airport) to downtown takes about 30 minutes — just hail one from the airport pickup zone. Bagan, Mandalay, and Inle Lake are outside Grab's service area, so you'll need to negotiate with a local taxi or motorbike taxi. In Bagan, renting an electric scooter is the most common way to explore the temple sites.
⚠️ Yangon transport caution: Given the unstable political situation, avoid going out at night and stay away from areas with protests or military checkpoints. Avoid getting into unfamiliar vehicles — always use an app-based ride.

You can negotiate the fare with a driver directly in the app for longer trips within Yangon. Note that driver acceptance rates can drop due to the unstable political situation, so allow extra time when hailing a ride. You can sign up with an international number, even without a local Myanmar SIM.

One of the most important tools for Myanmar travel. Save offline maps of downtown Yangon (around Bogyoke Aung San Market, Sule Pagoda, and the Strand Hotel), the Bagan archaeological complex, and markets near Inle Lake so you can explore without data. Most of Bagan's 2,000+ pagodas and temples are registered on Google Maps, making it useful for finding routes while exploring by bike or electric scooter. Pre-save the floating villages and markets (Intha markets) on Inle Lake offline as well. Rural roads in Myanmar are often unnamed, so it's best to navigate by major landmarks.
💡 Bagan exploration tip: Save offline maps for all three areas — Old Bagan, New Bagan, and Nyaung U — on Google Maps, so you don't get lost among the seemingly endless field of temples.

Myanmar's official language is Burmese. English works at upscale hotels and tour companies, but Burmese is essential at local markets, restaurants, and bus terminals. Downloading Google Translate's Myanmar (Burmese) offline pack ahead of time lets you translate without internet. Burmese script has a very distinctive look that can be disorienting at first sight, but camera translation instantly decodes signs, menus, and bus destinations. The Intha people around Inle Lake speak a distinct dialect, but most people working in tourism speak Burmese and English. Using a simple Burmese greeting ("mingalaba" = hello) with a Bagan guide or horse-cart driver goes a long way toward building goodwill.

International payments in Myanmar kyat (MMK) have been significantly restricted since 2021. A Wise card can be used at some ATMs in Myanmar, but the number of available ATMs is shrinking, so check ahead. Myanmar's economy runs heavily on cash, so the safest bet is to bring plenty of USD cash. Bring new, crisp USD bills — creased or worn bills may be rejected. Exchanging for kyat at an official currency exchange counter at Yangon airport or a hotel is the safest approach.

Holding a USD balance in your Revolut account helps you time your kyat exchange at a Myanmar airport currency counter for the best rate. However, places accepting international card payments in Myanmar are very limited, so plan your trip around cash.
💡 Cash is essential: Bagan temple admission, horse-cart or electric scooter rentals, market shopping, and local restaurants are all cash-only (kyat or USD). Only upscale hotels and a handful of large restaurants accept card payment.

Compare ratings and reviews for traditional Myanmar restaurants in Yangon (mohinga noodle soup, nan gyi thoke curry noodles, palata flatbread shops), riverside restaurants in Bagan, and floating restaurants on Inle Lake. There are quite a few reviews from Korean travelers too, which are helpful to reference. You can also search for local tea shops serving Myanmar's distinctive tea and coffee culture ("Myanmar tea shops").

Compare and book accommodation in Yangon, Bagan, Inle Lake, and Mandalay. Some properties have closed since 2021, but accommodation at major tourist sites is still operating. In Bagan, choose between Old Bagan, New Bagan, and Nyaung U depending on your planned route. On Inle Lake, floating bungalows over the water are popular and book up fast. Given the possibility of cancellation due to political changes, it's recommended to choose accommodation with a "Free cancellation" option.
