What is Dual SIM? How It Works and Benefits
نظرة سريعة
رقم Learn about dual SIM: concept, how it works, separating personal and works, and travel use.
TL;DR (Summary)
- Dual SIM lets you use two phone numbers (SIM/eSIM) on one device at the same time.
- You can separate personal and work numbers on a single phone, and keep your home number while using an eSIM for cheaper data when traveling abroad.
- Both iPhone and Galaxy support dual SIM.
What is Dual SIM?
Dual SIM is a feature that allows you to use two SIM cards or eSIMs at the same time in one phone. You can run two phone numbers on one device without carrying two phones.
Supported Combinations (by Device)
| Combination | Description |
|---|---|
| 2 physical SIMs | Devices with two physical SIM slots (some Android) |
| 1 physical SIM + 1 eSIM | Most common dual SIM setup (iPhone, Galaxy, etc.) |
| 2 eSIMs | Supported on some devices, e.g. iPhone 13 and later |
Most modern smartphones use physical SIM + eSIM for dual SIM.
How Does Dual SIM Work?
1) Assigning Roles to Each Line
When using dual SIM, you set the role of each line.
- Data line: Which SIM is used for internet and app data
- Default voice line: Which number is used for calls and messages
Only one line is used for data at a time; calls and messages can be sent and received on each line based on your settings.
2) Typical Setup for Travel Abroad
- Data: Travel eSIM
- Default voice: Home SIM (keep home number)
- Home SIM data roaming: OFF (avoid high roaming charges)
This way you can receive calls and texts on your home number while using a cheaper eSIM plan for data.
Benefits of Dual SIM
1) Two Numbers on One Device
You don’t need two phones. You can separate personal and work, or home and travel numbers.
2) Lower Roaming Costs When Traveling
- Keep home number: Send and receive calls and texts
- Use eSIM for data: Use a low-cost travel eSIM instead of carrier roaming
- Stay connected without high roaming fees
3) Separate Personal and Work Numbers
- You can label each line (e.g. “Personal”, “Work”)
- Take work calls only during work hours while keeping your personal number available
4) Easier to Compare Plans
With two lines, you can more easily compare plans and use the cheaper one for data.
Dual SIM Setup on iPhone
- Settings → Cellular
- Cellular Data → Select the line for data (e.g. eSIM)
- Default Voice Line → Select the line for calls/texts (e.g. home SIM)
- Turn Data Roaming OFF for the home SIM
See Using eSIM for Data While USIM Is Inserted for detailed steps.
Dual SIM Setup on Android (Galaxy)
- Settings → Connections → SIM manager
- Select the data line under Mobile data
- Select the default line under Voice calls and Text messages
- Turn Data roaming OFF for the home SIM
Things to Note
- Data roaming: Using data on your home SIM abroad may trigger roaming charges. Use eSIM for data and keep home SIM data roaming OFF.
- Active lines: The number of eSIMs you can use at once depends on the device (e.g. 1 before iPhone 12, 2 from iPhone 13).
